The Importance of Biological Rest in Preserving Fish Stocks in Lake Farwa
Publication date :January 5, 2021
Lake Farwa’s fish populations face threats from overfishing and environmental degradation. To combat this, biological rest—periods of no fishing—is essential for allowing fish to reproduce and replenish
Target Audience : Professional and amateur fishermen in the Lake Farwa area.
Registration Criteria: None (Open to all).
Registration: Paper registration form at the workshop venue
Participants’ Opinions:
The importance of preserving fish wealth was highlighted, along with proposals to address the issues facing fishermen. In the discussion session, some attendees, especially the fishermen, shared their opinions as follows:
- Fisherman H.N.:
He emphasized the fishermen’s commitment to helping and preserving marine biodiversity due to its significance as a profession, a source of income, and an important food for humans. He also pointed out that no institution or entity has informed them about studies on fish stock. In addition, he highlighted the struggles of fishermen with the lack of intervention and support from relevant government authorities to address these issues. He further added the problem of not setting fixed fish prices in the wholesale market, which has allowed some traders to manipulate market prices. - A.A.B.:
He raised the question of what solutions could be provided to fishermen to avoid entangling turtles and dolphins in their nets so as not to harm the catch. He also mentioned that new technologies could be introduced by the government to help mitigate such issues. - Fisherman S.D.:
He stated that fishermen lead a difficult life due to the lack of resources for fishing, which forces some to resort to illegal fishing methods (e.g., using prohibited tools). He called for alternatives to be provided for this group.
Challenges:
Fishermen face challenges such as a lack of resources, absence of studies on fish stock, and manipulation of fish prices in the market.
Proposed Solutions:
The necessity of providing alternatives for fishermen who use illegal tools. Developing new technologies to avoid catching protected marine species.
Objectives:
- Raise awareness about the importance of biological rest for preserving fish stocks.
- Educate fishermen on the risks threatening marine life in the lake.
- Encourage fishermen to adopt sustainable fishing practices.
Outcomes:
- Increased knowledge about the biodiversity of Lake Farwa.
- Understanding the impact of overfishing on the marine environment.
- Fishermen’s commitment to implementing the principles of biological rest.
