A workshop on risks and threats to artisanal fishing in Libya.

Publication date :January 30, 2021

Artisanal fishing in Libya is threatened by overfishing, pollution, and climate change. Conservation measures like fishing quotas and protected areas are vital for sustainability.

Audience: Fishermen in Furwah Lake
Registration: Paper registration form at the workshop venue
Registration Fee: No fee

Participants’ Feedback:

After all the presentations, a discussion session was opened where some attendees, especially fishermen,
shared their views. They emphasized the importance of consulting them before enacting any laws related to biological
rest, as this could conflict with their interests. A dialogue was held, explaining that including certain species in the biological rest program ensures
the sustainability of these species and their availability for future generations.

Objectives:

  • Identify the main risks threatening artisanal fishing in Furwah Lake.
  • Raise awareness among fishermen about these risks.
  • Discuss proposed solutions to protect fish stocks.
  • Strengthen cooperation between fishermen and environmental organizations.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Develop a joint action plan for fish stock protection.
  • Increase fishermen’s participation in decisions related to fishery management.
