Shark Camp in Djerba

In the framework of ongoing efforts to protect the marine environment and promote artisanal fishing, the Shark Camp was held in Djerba under the slogan “Protect Me” from March 5 to 8, 2024. The event was attended by more than 50 participants, including representatives of environmental associations from Tunisia and Libya, fishermen, civil society organizations, experts, and students.

The Libyan Association of Friends of Artisanal Fishing was represented by Dr. Ismail Shuqman, Sarah Bin Zuqlam, and Mohamed Al-Hajjaji. The event also included representatives from the General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Coastal Protection and Development Agency, the National Institute of Marine Sciences and Technologies, and regional organizations.

The activities provided a wonderful opportunity to present a smart application that helps identify species of cartilaginous fish and their characteristics. This application represents an important step towards raising environmental awareness and preserving biodiversity in our seas.

We extend our gratitude to the Ministry of Environment – Libya for its continuous support of environmental associations and to the WWF organization for organizing such events. We look forward to more initiatives in the future that foster dialogue and cooperation between the two countries in preserving the marine environment and promoting sustainable artisanal fishing.
