Sustainability of Fishing in Lake Farwa
Fishing in Lake Farwa is threatened by overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution. Ensuring sustainability requires adopting practices like regulated fishing, habitat protection, and empowering local fishermen to balance livelihoods with ecological conservation.
Evaluation: Feedback surveys were distributed to participants to measure their satisfaction with the workshop.
Audience: Local fishermen, civil society members, researchers, and university students interested in marine sciences and fisheries.
Registration Criteria: Priority was given to local fishermen and members of participating associations.
Fees: No fees were charged to participants.
Certificates: Certificates of attendance were awarded to participants.
Follow-up: Complementary workshops will be organized, along with follow-up on the implementation of the action plans developed during the workshop.
Overall Evaluation:
The workshop was generally successful in achieving its objectives. Participants showed positive engagement with the materials and facilitators. However, some participants highlighted the need for additional financial and technical support to implement the action plans.
Recommendations:
- Continuous Follow-up: Organize complementary workshops to deepen knowledge and provide ongoing support.
- Building Partnerships: Strengthen collaboration with governmental and non-governmental organizations to secure necessary resources.
- Developing Training Tools: Create specialized training materials in Arabic tailored to the needs of local fishermen.
Objectives:
- Raise awareness about the importance of sustainable fishing and its economic and social impacts.
- Build fishermen’s capacity to adopt environmentally friendly fishing practices.
- Develop local action plans to enhance the sustainability of fisheries in Lake Farwa.
Outcomes:
- Increased participant awareness of the importance of preserving fishery resources.
- Enhanced skills in fisheries management among participants.
- Creation of practical action plans to implement sustainable fishing principles.

Activity:
The Concept of Sustainable Fishing Development
Sustainable development meets current needs without harming future generations’ ability to meet theirs. It aims to maximize ecosystem benefits while preserving them.
Fishing impacts ecosystems through:
Damage to benthic habitats
Bycatch of non-target species
Disruption of food chains
Other human activities, like agriculture and coastal development, also affect marine ecosystems and species diversity.

Activity:
Fisheries Management
Most fisheries impact fish stocks, with targeted fishing focusing on specific species, while bycatch harms biodiversity. Fisheries management aims to:
Protect the ecological foundation of production
Control fish quality (size and age)
Regulate fishing mortality and inputs
Manage production and catch, ensuring balance across multiple stocks.

Activity:
Sustainable Fishing Tourism
Sustainable fishing tourism, promoted by WWF, helps ensure livelihoods for coastal communities in overfished oceans. It aims to:
Reduce fishing activity intensity
Support sustainable fisheries management
Promote artisanal fishing heritage
Coastal tourism’s link to economic and social development shows its importance, especially in regions with untapped tourism potential.
