Celebrating International Day for Biological Diversity

In a distinguished scientific atmosphere, the Libyan Association for Friends of Artisanal Fishing, in collaboration with the Department of Zoology at the Faculty of Science, University of Tripoli, hosted a special event to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity. The gathering underscored the vital importance of preserving biodiversity and supporting national efforts to protect ecosystems, with a particular focus on marine environments. The event brought together a prominent group of academics, researchers, and environmental advocates. The program featured insightful speeches and awareness-raising lectures highlighting the crucial role of biodiversity in maintaining ecological balance and achieving sustainable development.

Forging Strategic Partnerships for Sustainability

A key highlight of the celebration was the formal signing of joint cooperation agreements aimed at boosting scientific research and environmental action. The Libyan Association for Friends of Artisanal Fishing signed partnerships with:

  • Al-Saraya Al-Hamra University
  • The Libyan Center for Climate Change Research

These agreements are designed to strengthen scientific and research cooperation, support initiatives dedicated to marine conservation, protect biodiversity, and address climate change challenges.

This milestone reflects a shared commitment to building strong bridges between academic institutions, research centers, and civil society organizations. Together, these partnerships aim to raise environmental awareness and foster collective action for a more sustainable future for Libya’s environment.

“Sustainable Transformation and Partnership in Energy and Environment in Libya” (STEP) project

Ms.Nairouz Hassan Bak, member of the Biodiversity Sector Committee in the Climate Change Program and representative of the Libyan Society for Artisanal Fishing Friends, participated with the Libyan delegation in the “Sustainable Transformation and Partnership in Energy and Environment in Libya” (STEP) project.Representatives from Libyan climate-related sectors took part in a technical exchange visit to Tunisia from May 4 to 6, 2026, aimed at strengthening cooperation and exchanging expertise in climate change adaptation. The visit included meetings with Tunisian institutions specialized in environment, agriculture, and water resources, as well as a field visit to coastal adaptation and biodiversity projects in the Bizerte Governorate. The initiative supports Libya’s efforts to develop climate adaptation plans and enhance coordination among different sectors.

Sea Generations Initiative

Because our depths are a sacred trust… we continue to plant the seeds of love for the ocean in the hearts of the next generation.

As part of the #SeaGenerationsInitiative, an awareness lecture on marine biodiversity was held, highlighting its primary threats and ways to protect it. The session was presented by Ms. Aisha Seif Al-Nasr using an interactive and simplified approach tailored for primary education students.

We don’t just teach… we empower the #OceanGuardians.

“Sea Generations” Initiative: Cultivating a Love for the Ocean in Our Youth

Because our marine depths are a heritage we must protect, the Libyan Association of Friends of Artisanal Fishing is proud to announce the launch of its flagship awareness project: #Sea_Generations_Initiative. This initiative aims to connect primary school students with the wonders of marine science, fostering a generation that values and protects our aquatic treasures.

About the Project

“Sea Generations” is a series of intensive awareness lectures and interactive workshops tailored for students. Our mission is to introduce the youth to marine biology, the beauty of Mediterranean ecosystems, and the vital importance of preserving our water resources for a sustainable future.

The First Stop: An Inspiring Start at Kids Academy

Our journey began in early February at Kids Academy, where students embarked on a “Journey into the Unknown.”

  • A Virtual Dive: Led by Ms. Sara Bin Zaglam, a dedicated member of the association, the classroom was transformed into a virtual diving experience.
  • Discovery: Students engaged with the mysteries of the Mediterranean, learning about Libya’s unique marine species and hidden underwater treasures.

Our Vision

We believe that environmental stewardship starts in the classroom. By helping children understand the scientific and ecological value of our coastline, we are not just teaching a subject—we are building a generation of #Sea_Guardians.

Stay tuned! Our educational tour is just beginning, with many more schools and coastal discoveries to come.
